Japanese OBI MINI REPLICA BOX SET WHAT IS A JAPAN "MINI/REPLICA-LP-SLEEVE" CD? Have you ever lamented the loss of one of the 20th Century's great art forms, the 12" vinyl LP jacket? Then "mini-LP-sleeve" CD's may be for you. Mini-sleeve CDs are manufactured in Japan under license. The disc is packaged inside a 135MM X 135MM cardboard precision-miniature replica of the original classic vinyl-LP album. Also, anything contained in the original LP, such as gatefolds, booklets, lyric sheets, posters, printed LP sleeves, stickers, embosses, special LP cover paper/inks/textures and/or die cuts, are precisely replicated and included. An English-language lyric sheet is always included, even if the original LP did not have printed lyrics. Then, there's the sonic quality: Mini-sleeves have dedicated remastering (20-Bit, 24-Bit, DSD, K2/K2HD, and/or HDCD), and can often be superior to the audio on the same title anywhere else in the world. There also may be bonus tracks unavailable elsewhere. Each Japan mini-sleeve has an "obi" ("oh-bee"), a removable Japan-language promotional strip. The obi lists the Japan street date of that particular release, the catalog number, the mastering info, and often the original album's release date. Bonus tracks are only listed on the obi, maintaining the integrity of the original LP artwork. The obi's are collectable, and should not be discarded. All mini-sleeve releases are tremendously limited editions mainly pressed on future orders only and once released immediately out of print. This fact along with other latter features we've mentioned make these titles rare collectibles that sell in the collectors markets for $100's of dollars apiece. And I must be the only Nirvana fan on the planet whose favorite song is Big Long Now. Why is this song so ignored? My god, the words, the haunting melody, the haunting vocals... .... I won't get into analysing the songs and interpreting them blow-by-blow, but I will say that Kurt Cobain uses at least 7 different voices on this CD, and that each song is melodically and instrumentally genuine and original. The cover songs are also brilliant. And here's just a little tidbit I have to mention: I became a Nirvana fan only quite recently. I was slightly too young for the whole Nirvana craze of 1991, and the tragedy of 1994. But when I recently purchased Nevermind, I was hooked. Now, I purchased that album of course because that was "the one to get". HOWEVER, in a matter of one week, I had heard both In Utero and Incesticide, and quite honestly I don't think the big blaring "WARNING"-s are all that important for first-time listeners of the less-commercial Nirvana, if those listeners know good music when they hear it. This is just pure, glorious music with a brain, the kind where you can't predict the ending before the song is halfway through. The kind that you can't sing along to all that easily. The kind where you have to make an effort, for god's sake. If the pop sap of today's various 'NStynks didn't drain you of your senses, get this CD. Don't be hesitant. And get Bleach and In Utero with it. There's more to Nirvana than Nevermind and Unplugged, as utterly fabulous as those two are (and my goodness, they are!). It might take a couple of listenings to get used to Incesticide. But only a couple. The quality will then speak for itself. THE MUDDY BANKS OF THE WISHKAH - The main gripe with this album seems to be its sloppy playing or its track selection. Yes, the versions of 'Breed' and 'Heart-Shaped Box' are a little off. Maybe the studio version of 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' was better. 'Scentless Apprentice' may not have had the same quality vocals as the studio version. That was intended by Grohl and Novoselic. Unplugged was a GREAT release. Just about every magazine and music website recommends that you own it. It was very polished but it was very downbeat; 'Muddy Banks...' is the exact opposite. It's full of life, it's sloppy, it's LOUD, it's what Nirvana should be remembered as. Nirvana didn't break into the music industry as a depressing, acoustic band to touch our hearts. They were faster, louder, more emotional, and better than all that worthless pop that dominated the charts in the early 90s. Dave Grohl and Kris Novoselic wanted Nirvana to be remembered like that, and they did a great job of it. As for the song selection - maybe it wasn't what everyone wanted. There's no such thing as a perfect compilation cd. I'm sure lots of people wanted a live version of 'Rape Me' or a better version of 'Smells Like Teen Spirit.' 'In Bloom' would've been great and maybe some more tracks from 'In Utero.' Unreleased stuff would've ben equally as nice! The song selection on here is a good representative selection of (except for a couple songs) Nirvana, including mostly uncommercial songs like 'Negative Creep' and 'Milk It' (meaning people who only liked 'Teen Spirit' won't like this release a whole lot except for that one song). THIS IS ESSENTIAL Nirvana material, anybody who says otherwise is wrong. Oh, and check out that punked-out electric version of 'Polly. UNPLUGGED IN NEW YORK - November of 1994 saw the release of Nirvana's first posthumous album, "MTV Unplugged in New York." The album was recorded just six months before the death of Kurt Cobain and released just six months after. Much like John Lennon's "Double Fantasy," (1980) it's hard to listen to the album and take it out of the context surrounding its tragic circumstances. "MTV Unplugged in New York City" would be a somber enough album as is, but considering Cobain died shortly after it was recorded, the album takes on special meaning. The album possesses the tone and atmosphere of a funeral, although it's not so depressing that it becomes unlistenable. Rather, "MTV Unplugged in New York City" serves as a tribute and memorial to one of rock's most talented musicians. Much like "Double Fantasy," "MTV Unplugged in New York City" serves as an artist's bittersweet goodbye. The Nirvana power trio of Cobain, (guitar, vocals) Dave Grohl, (drums, bass) and Krist Novoselic (bass, accordion, guitar) is joined by Pat Smear (guitar). Lori Goldston (cello) joins the band for many of the songs. Curt and Cris Kirkwood (guitar, bass) of the Meat Puppets join the band for three renditions of songs from the Meat Puppets "Meat Puppets II" (1984). A second guitar player thickens the sound and leaves Cobain free to solo. The added cello works very nicely, enhancing and enriching the songs. The added cello especially shines in "Pennyroyal Tea" and "Something in the way." Stripped down renditions of songs from Nirvana's three albums, "Bleach," (1989) "Nevermind," (1991) and "In Utero," (1993) offer a subtler, but equally exciting take on the classics. While unplugged versions of songs can often yield mixed results, nothing is lost in the sparseness of these renditions. There are several cover songs on this recording by artists including the Vaselines, the Meat Puppets, Leadbelly and David Bowie. Nirvana's adaptations of these songs match, perhaps even outshine the originals. As others have pointed out, Cobain takes other artists songs and makes them his own. While the album is interspersed with cover songs, nothing ever seems out of place. The album has an easygoing, soothing flow which never gets monotonous. It's the type of album that you can listen to again once you are finished. "MTV Unplugged in New York City" was recorded live at Sony Music Studios on November 18, 1993. In front of an audience and off-the-cuff, "MTV Unplugged in New York City" offers a rare glimpse into whom Cobain was as a person. His chatter with the band and his interaction with the audience show him to be sensitive, articulate, meticulous, humble, and not without a sense of humor. It's hard to listen to this album and not have Cobain's imminent suicide on the back of ones mind. "All Apologies" sounds especially poignant when placed in this context, knowing how much pain Cobain must have felt while performing. While Cobain's early death was a great loss, his legacy and genius is immortalized on this recording. With "MTV Unplugged in New York City," Cobain should not be mourned, but rather his life and his music should be celebrated. This recording serves as a fitting epithet to one of rocks most tortured, genuine and gifted talents. IN UTERO - Nirvana probably hired to produce with the hopes of creating their own , or at least shoring up their indie cred after becoming a pop phenomenon with a glossy punk record, of course, turned out to be their last record, and it's hard not to hear it as 's suicide note, since stark, uncompromising sound provides the perfect setting for 's bleak, even nihilistic, lyrics. Even if the album wasn't a literal suicide note, it was certainly a conscious attempt to shed their audience - an attempt that worked, by the way, since the record had lost its momentum when Kurt Cobain died in the spring of 1994. Even though the band tempered some of 's extreme tactics in a remix, the record remains a deliberately alienating experience, front-loaded with many of its strongest songs, then descending into a series of brief, dissonant squalls before concluding with All Apologies , which only gets sadder with each passing year. Throughout it all, Kurt Cobain's songwriting is typically haunting, and its best moments rank among his finest work, but the over-amped dynamicism of the recording seems like a way to camouflage his dispiritedness - as does the fact that he consigned such great songs as Verse Chorus Verse and I Hate Myself and Want to Die to compilations, when they would have fit, even illuminated the themes of suicide. Even without those songs, remains a shattering listen, whether it's viewed as Cobain's farewell letter or self-styled audience alienation. Few other records are as willfully difficult as this. You will be one of the last people in the world to upgrade our music collection with this "out of print" 24-Karat Gold Limited Edition masterpiece.Included in this pivotal recording is the song that changed the direction of Rock Music Smells Like Teen Spirit ( also rated as the 41st best single of all-time ). This CD includes the unlisted bonus track Endless Nameless. Selected the Second best album in rocks history. If Nevermind 's sound is familiar now , it's only because thousands of rock records that followed it were trying very hard to cop its style. It tears out of the speakers like a cannonball, from the punk-turbo-charged riff of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" onward, magnifying and distilling the wounded rage of 15 years of the rock underground into a single impassioned roar. Few albums have occupied the cultural consciousness like this one; of its 12 songs, roughly 10 are now standards. The record's historical weight can make it hard to hear now with fresh ears, but the monumental urgency of Kurt Cobain's screams is still shocking Original album 1. Smells Like Teen Spirit 2.
