An English-language lyric sheet is always included, even if the original LP did not have printed lyrics. Then, there's the sonic quality: Mini-sleeves have dedicated remastering (20-Bit, 24-Bit, DSD, K2/K2HD, and/or HDCD), and can often be superior to the audio on the same title anywhere else in the world. The rhythmic verve that propels the songs, the arrangements that spotlight his band's burgeoning "funkyness" (an undiscovered word in 1960), in short, all those signifiers that showed up sporadically on PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE and TRY ME! are here in full, no bull. This has more than a little to do with the fact that Brown recorded THINK! with his touring ensemble, which by this time was a well-oiled groove machine.Just listen to the drive of the title cut (a top ten R&B hit in the spring of 1960), and see if you can stop yourself from doing the shake. J.C. Davis' tenor, Alfred Corley's alto and Nat Kendrick's snare wrap the song's pulse in a funky blanket before JB utters a syllable, creating a rhythmic masterpiece that is a precursor to Brown's legendary horn/beat romps of the mid- to late-'60s. The Davis-led horns also steal the spotlight from the band-leader on "Good Good Lovin'," an up-tempo R&B shuffle with a ska-tinged guitar by Bobby Roach. "I'll Go Crazy" also benefits from Roach's guitar, rising above the standard shimmy on the strength of his eerie, travelling, repetitious lines. Still, reprieve from all this early funkin' about can be found on "You've Got The Power," a hoarse, soulful duet with Bea Ford. But Brown was a singles artist almost exclusively; for him, LPs simply constituted a different configuration in which to re-sell his singles. So, his '60s LPs consisted of his current hit plus previously released singles tracks. The I Got You (I Feel Good) LP was no exception: Leading off with the title track, it included songs that dated back to 1959's "Good, Good Loving." The title track, a musical anthem for the civil rights movement that is Brown's first foray into material dealing with social issues, is a loose and funky booty-mover that still manages to be a battle cry for cultural identity. Beautiful ballads like the funk-inflected "Goodbye My Love" and "I Guess I'll Have To Cry, Cry, Cry" (given a dramatic, string-laden rendering here) feature Brown's trademark banshee-in-heat wail. All of the aforementioned songs charted on both the R&B and pop charts, as did the super-groovy "Licking Stick"--a song to which it is literally impossible to sit still. Consequently, the later tracks bear the mark of Brown's souped-up funk, but earlier recordings include a sentimental take on the ballad "Till Then," previously popularized by the Mills Brothers (!), a quaint "message" song about staying in school ("Don't Be a Dropout"), and a loungey, vibes-led instrumental ("Yours and Mine"). The album naturally picks up when Brown and his band turn up the heat, as on the existential funk of "Money Won't Change You" and the aptly titled, hard-grooving "Let Yourself Go." An interesting spotlight is placed on Brown's roots when the '50s doo-wop standard "Only You" is given a 6/8, mid-'60s-style R&B treatment. Additionally, it's an unexpected treat to hear James merge jazz and soul on an impressive version of "The Nearness of You."
